A Good Weekend For Watsons
- by14STIX on25th January, 2010 inBlog
-
It was a good weekend to be a Watson. My childhood golfing idol and fellow Kansas Citian, Tom Watson, defeated Fred Couples at the Champions Tour's season opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship. Tom nearly shot is age on Friday, firing a smooth 63 and closed with rounds of 66 on Saturday and a 65 on Sunday that included birdies on the final two holes. The birdie on 18 was set up by a expertly struck pitching wedge from 147 yards in the first cut of rough that landed twenty feet from the hole and rolled to within four. Watson calmly knocked in the four-footer (though the stroke did have a little bit of that pulled inside-closed and pushed open follow through that we saw on the 18th at Turnberry last summer) and in doing so became the 13th oldest player to win on the Champions Tour.
Bubba Watson, of trick shot fame, also concluded the weekend in a good spot - on top of the leaderboard at the Bob Hope Classic. Watson and Alex Prugh share a one shot lead over Bill Haas heading into today's final round. A win for Bubba would be his first on tour and a second for Travis Mathew staffers in three weeks. Practice Tracks: Dan Black feat. Kid Cudi - Symphonies (Remix)
- by14STIX on20th January, 2010 inBlog
-
Dan Black is an artist from the UK mainly dabbling in electronica. He's getting ready for the debut of his new album "UN" later this summer, and in advance of the release collaborated with one of my favorite artists, Kid Cudi, on the remix of "Symphonies". You can download it here if you like what you hear. Recognize that beat? Yup, that's Rhianna's "Umbrella". It seems that Mr. Black is pretty fond of that beat because he laid down the vocals to Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize" to the same drum/snare combo.
Don't believe me? Watch and listen.
We're still partial to "Symphonies" because of Cudi's verses. So, go ahead and download it, throw it on the ol' iPod and go work on your game.
Oh, I added a poll to these installments called UP or DOWN. Let us know what you think of this week's track by voting after the jump.

Keep Your Eyes Off Pat Perez's Bag
- by14STIX on19th January, 2010 inBlog
-
Pat Perez does not like guys checking out his bag. In fact, it displeases him so much that he's gone to unusual lengths to protect its contents. Most likely if you want to peek at it you'll have to pull out a magnifying glass, which really doesn't sound all that flattering if you ask me, Pat.
PP actually had the folks at TaylorMade reduce the font size of the numbers on his irons in an effort to make it more difficult for competitors to figure out what club he's hitting. I guess I understand the line of thought, but honestly, Pat, shouldn't you be more worried about your own shot rather than what the guy next to you is trying to do? It served you well at the Bob Hope last year (-33 under!) dude and I expect that a similar focus would get you into the winners circle for the second time. And besides, golf is supposed to be a game based on honor and integrity. I guess that Pat doesn't feel the same way about his fellow competitors, which is sort of a sad commentary in itself.
Future Perez pairing partners, consider yourself warned. The fiery Mr. Perez likes boxing, so you could catch a right hook for your wandering eyes.
What do you think about Double P's shrinkage? Vote after the jump.

Global Golf Post
- by14STIX on18th January, 2010 inBlog
-
Quick post today. There are lots of places to get your weekly fill of golf news and tournament coverage these days. I've always have been (and will be) partial to Golfweek because of the high level of writing and the consistent and relentless focus on improving its content and format.
Recently, I came across an all digital weekly golf publication called Global Golf Post. It's an interesting concept with solid writing, elegant layout, and stunning images. The part that appeals most to me is the ability to archive the content. Since it's all digital I can go back to any article, picture or issue anytime. Another great advantage that Global Golf Post enjoys is immediacy. The new issues is delivered to my inbox first thing on Monday morning - whereas I have to wait until the following Saturday for Golfweek to arrive.
If you're interested in Global Golf Post you can sign up for a subscription here. Check it out. Let us know what you think.

Will Bubba Be The Next To Join The Travis Mathew Team?
- by14STIX on12th January, 2010 inThe Deals
-
Bubba Watson shows that he'd not only be tough competition in a long drive contest but also in a backyard game of golfer's H.O.R.S.E. You can can check out some of his other trick shots here. Now, if he had a someone to play against these videos would ad campaign worthy - perhaps reminiscent of this famous series.
Incidentally, Mr. Watson also appears to be showing off some new gear from Travis Mathew.
We don't know if Bubba is wearing TM gear because he likes it or because a new deal might be imminent (I suppose the two don't have to be mutually exclusive) but the speculation among fellow bloggers The Khaki Crusader and Chapeau Noir Golf seems to lean toward the latter over the former.
We should have a better idea starting on Thursday as Bubba is scheduled to kick his 2010 season off in Hawaii at The Sony. Looking at the first round pairings, it seems that no matter what Mr. Watson has on he'll most likely be upstaged by his less sartorially subtle playing partner...well, at least until they tally up the score card that is.

Ogilvy Puts TM On Repeat Victory at SBS
- by14STIX on11th January, 2010 inBlog
-
Geoff Ogilvy successfully defended his title at the Mercedes BenzSBS Championship this past weekend, joining Stewart Appleby as the only other player to win the event in consecutive years since the tournament moved to Kapalua in 1999. Appleby actually won the event three straight years.
The first event of the 2010 season was a fresh start for Ogilvy having recently inked a multi-year deal to become a Titleist Brand Ambassador that includes playing the Titleist golf ball, Titleist golf clubs, wearing Titleist headwear and carrying a Titleist golf bag.
Find out what Geoff had in the bag this week here.
In addition to the new equipment deal, Ogilvy shed his familiar Puma apparel in favor of emerging industry upstart (and one of 14 STIX's favorite lines...) Travis Mathew shirts and pants. That's the iQ polo that he's wearing in the photo to the left and you can get it here. A win by Ogilvy in TM gear should be huge for the fledgling company. He's the biggest most recognizable name on their growing PGA Tour / Nationwide Team and has always been one step ahead of the fashion curve (thankfully not 50 steps ahead like the guy G.O. beat this week). Travis Mathew hasn't yet announced the deal with Ogilvy but there's a conspicuous "New Player" to be announced on their newly redesigned website. Hmmm, wonder who that could be?
We'll be catching up with the guys at Travis Mathew later this month at the PGA Show in Orlando so stay tuned for more info on the deal and all the latest from their upcoming Spring/Summer line.

Practice Tracks - BlakRoc
- by14STIX on9th January, 2010 inBlog
-
There isn't much golf going on in my neck of the woods these days since everything is buried under about a foot and a half of snow and ice. But I do get a little bit of indoor practice done from time to time. Usually, I do some putting and chipping in the basement and some swing work in the mirror - and I've got to have some music on in the background otherwise I'll only practice for 5 minutes.
I'll be posting more of what I've been listening to in future installments, so stay tuned. Here's what I've been listening to lately.
I picked up BlakRoc a few weeks back. It's a collaborative effort from blues/rock group The Black Keys and hip hop/R&B artists like Mos Def, RZA, Q-Tip, Jim Jones and Nicole Wray. It's not like other rap-rock albums that typically seem contrived or forced. Blues and hip hop are not-too-distant relatives so it's really less of a mash-up and more of a creative fusion. It reminds me a little bit of how The Roots sound live but with more blues and less 70's R&B funk.
There's also a series of webisodes that were produced to give listeners an inside look at the 'creative process' (i.e. weed, Hennessy, champagne) and how the tunes evolved into their finished form. The one above is RZA's day in the studio. It's pretty damn funny. You can check out the rest of the videos over here.
FAVORITE TRACK: On The Vista (feat. Mos Def)

Wie-turn to the 80's
- by14STIX on6th January, 2010 inBlog
-

So, I was flipping through Golfweek's 2010 preview edition when I came across the article on the emergence of Michelle Wie. It's an interesting read, but what caught my attention was the gear Michelle wore for the photo shoot. The Vans I like (full disclosure: I own about 5 pair myself), but acid wash jeans, really? I know the saying everything old becomes new again, but things like acid-wash jeans, tight rolls and jazzercise (unless we're talking about this particular class) should stay put in the past.
Here's another shot of the acid-wash incident. Wie says she's found an exciting new hobby: sewing. Wow! Sounds sew fun!
